How to turn a video into a GIF that does not look terrible

Converting video to GIF fails in a predictable way. The result is either enormous, or it looks blotchy with visible bands of color where the video had a smooth gradient. Both problems come from the same source: the 256 color limit, and how the converter chooses those 256 colors.

Palette generation is the whole trick

A naive converter picks a fixed, generic palette and forces every frame into it. A good converter analyses your specific clip first, builds a palette from the colors that actually appear in it, and only then encodes the frames. The difference is dramatic on anything with sky, skin or a gradient background.

Keep the clip short

Every second you add multiplies the size, because every frame is stored in full. A three second GIF is comfortable. A ten second GIF is already awkward. Beyond fifteen seconds you should be asking whether an MP4 would serve better.

If you need a specific moment, trim the video before converting rather than converting the whole thing and hoping. Most phone galleries and video players can trim in place.

If it still looks bad

Two causes account for most remaining problems. The first is fast motion: GIF has no motion compensation, so a fast pan turns into a slideshow of unrelated frames and the size explodes. Choose a steadier section. The second is a dark clip: dark gradients need more palette entries than bright ones, so raise quality rather than lowering it.
